ORIANTHI – BRINGING THE HEAT FROM DOWN UNDER TO THE IRIDIUM IN NEW YORK CITY!
NOVEMBER 13th, 2023
Australian born Orianthi told the crowd at the historic Iridium Lounge in Times Square New York that she was born “down under” and lives most of the time in Los Angeles so although she “loves the New York vibe”, she does not like the “New York cold!”
With that the New York crowd was treated to an hour and a half of scorching hot guitar licks by one of the top female axe players in the world. Orianthi took the stage accompanied by threeback up musicians. The guitar queen serenaded the crowd with her signature Paul Reed Smith 6-string, blending a perfect mix of her own songs with great covers by legendary performers. Folks were treated to a very edgy version of Michael Jackson’s “Black or White”, (Orianthi rehearsed and was set to perform with Michael on his 2009 tour before his untimely death), ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man”, The Allman Brother’s “Midnight Rider” and a beautiful acoustic rendition of fellow Australian Keith Urban’s Country Hit, “Somebody Like You”. A great BB King Blues song “You Don’t Know” KNOW was also in the set list. Some of Orianthi’s own compilations thrown into the mix were “Think Like A Man”, “Heaven in This Hell”, and quite possibly her most successful solo effort “According To You” from her second solo release “Believe”, which closed out the main set.
There were, however, in my opinion, two definite highlights to the show. The first was Orianthi’s homage paying tribute to her guitar idol and mentor, Carlos Santana. A phenomenal cover of Santana’s “Europa”, flowing right into “Soul Sacrifice” was delivered note for note. It was brilliant! The packed room hollered in delight.
The final tour de force was the encore. The band returned for a blistering interpretation of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child”. If you closed your eyes, you would not be able to tell the difference between Jimi’s 1968 and Orianthi’s 2023 versions. Orianthi is THAT GOOD.
Additional performances will be taking place at the Iridium November 14th and 15th and Orianthi will continue her tour with upcoming shows in Michigan and Illinois. This is a definite “MUST SEE” artist and show!
